Christy Gardner, a veteran, was severely injured 18 years ago while serving in the army. Now a double amputee, with both legs removed below the knee, she relies on sophisticated prosthetics for her mobility. She is the founder of the nonprofit group that trains service and therapy dogs for those with disabilities, mostly veterans, to help them live more independently. Overseeing the entire operation was Doug, Christy’s own certified service dog. Doug warns Christy of any impending seizures (a result of traumatic brain injury), fetches items, and provides moral support. Christy is a full-time athlete who trains for the Paralympic track-and-field Shot-put competition team. She represents the U.S. in track-and-field and sled-hockey game events. The Mission Working Dog’s new campus in located in Oxford.
