Christy Gardner, a veteran, was severely injured 18 years ago while serving in the army. Now a double amputee, with both legs removed below the knee, she relies on sophisticated prosthetics for her mobility.  She is the founder of the nonprofit group that trains service and therapy dogs for those with disabilities, mostly veterans, to help them live more independently.  Overseeing the entire operation was Doug, Christy’s own certified service dog. Doug warns Christy of any impending seizures (a result of traumatic brain injury), fetches items, and provides moral support.  Christy is a full-time athlete who trains for the Paralympic track-and-field Shot-put competition team. She represents the U.S. in track-and-field and sled-hockey game events. The Mission Working Dog’s new campus in located in Oxford. Rockland Rotary was pleased to welcome our District Governor, Sue Pratt, from the Rotary Club of Farmington, who visited our club during our Wednesday meeting. After the meeting, a group of Rotarians gave her a city tour of some of the projects Rockland Rotary has done and donated to our community like the park benches at Harbor Park & Snow's Marine Park, the brick walkway around the flag pole at Chapman Park, the little league field dugouts on Pleasant St., the All-Inclusive Playground, handicap accessible picnic tables, and pavilion at MacDougal Park, and lastly our "Flags for Heroes" project at MacDougal Park that's dedicated to honoring heroes.
Rockland Rotary presents District Governor, Sue Pratt, with a $1,500 check to support the purchase of library books for the Safe Passage District 7790 Project in Guatemala.  The Safe Passage Project is a nonprofit school working in Guatemala City since 1999 and is registered as a Pre-K through 9th grade school. It utilizes a holistic approach that expands the definition of education to mitigate underlying factors that contribute to poor educational outcomes. Additional programs include educational reinforcement for high school students, health care, social and nutritional services. T goal is to bring hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families trying to make a living around the city’s garbage dump—one of the largest landfills in Central America.

Rockland Rotary sponsored its annual Craft Fair at Ash Point Community School, which was another huge success!  The gym was packed with talented crafters with a variety of many unique items.  There was a steady flow of people perusing, shopping, and chatting with crafters and friends.  Rotary's "Baked Goods" tables offered an assortment of irresistible tasty treats (especially Carol's apple turnovers), and the Straw Raffle winners' cheering enticed other curious shoppers to try their hand at winning a fabulous prize donated by the many generous crafters.  The camaraderie with fellow Rotarians, crafters, friends, family, and shoppers made for a fabulous day. Thank you all who made this annual event such a success so that Rockland Rotary can continue its mission to serve those in need within our community!

Ken joined Rockland Rotary in 1972 at the age of 35. At that time, Rev. William Robbins was the president and Rotary was a suit-and-tie association made up of professional men.  Ken was recently honored for his 52 years as a Rockland Rotarian, with 50 years of perfect attendance. Over the years Ken has served on various committees, spent 9 years on the Board of Directors, and became president in 1985.  During his presidential year, Ken attended the Rotary International Convention in Las Vegas. This convention was the one that voted to extinguish Polio by Rotary International’s 100th Anniversary in 2005.  Just three years later at the Philadelphia Convention, Rotary had raised the money to take on Polio, pertussis, red measles and more.  During Ken’s presidential year (‘85-’86), Rockland Rotary earned the Rotary Attendance Award for the entire District.  Most recently, Ken has had the privilege of being Rockland Rotary’s chaplain and instituting the weekly “Rotary Minute”.  He is the club’s Rotary International Foundation chairperson.  Ken and his late wife, Mary, generously contributed to the “All-Aboard Inclusive Playground” located at MacDonald Park.  Although no one currently in the club was a Rotarian when Ken joined, Ken states, “Rotary has been a lot more than a club to me, it is a way of life.  All of the Rockland Rotarians have been like family, and I’m so grateful.”  Rockland Rotary is proud to honor Ken Gricus with their prestigious Rotarian of the Year 2025 Award.

Jake Barbour Is President of JBI, which is a full-service earthworks contractor based in the mid-coast area.  He is also the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Rockland. Jake has done many things for the community over the years with monetary and “In Kind” assistance. During the past year, Jake volunteered his time, equipment, and personnel to excavate and prep the site for the Rockland Rotary All-Inclusive Playground and pavilion. He donated gravel for the pathways leading to the playground and pavilion to make it handicap accessible.  At the MacDougal Park, Jake planted trees and shrubs around the perimeter and filled in low spots to prevent “ponding”. Among other numerous commercial and municipal projects, Jake assisted with the new beach access at Rockland Breakwater. Jake’s commitment to improving our community is evident by his generous contributions.  Rockland Rotary is proud to honor Jake with their prestigious Community Person of the Year 2025 Award.

The first woman Rotary President was Sylvia Whitlock. As an American advocate, trailblazer, and humanitarian for women, she was the first to serve as president of the Rotary Club of Duarte in 1987.  In 1989, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement in the Rotary International Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men, which opened the door for women to become Rotary members.
On October, 2021, Jennifer E. Jones became president-nominee, the first women to be nominated to be Rotary International President. She served as RI President from 2022-2023.

Today, many women are active in Rotary. Our Rockland Rotary Club has women who are committed to serving their communities and who actively take part in leadership positions.
